Blepharoplasty Description & Benefits

Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) is a cosmetic surgical procedure that removes fat deposits, excess tissue, or muscle from the eyelids to improve the appearance of the eyes. Blepharoplasty can be performed on the upper or lower eyelid and can be done to correct ptosis (sagging eyelids), remove fatty bulges around the eyes, and eliminate hanging skin from the eyelids. For people who feel that their eyes seem ‘hooded’, old or tired, Blepharoplasty is a highly effective procedure that can restore a more youthful appearance. Blepharoplasty cannot correct dark circles, lift sagging eyebrows, or remove crow's feet. For Asian patients, this procedure can add an upper eyelid crease where there may have not been one before. Blepharoplasty can also be performed in conjunction with a face life or other facial plastic surgeries.

Blepharoplasty Procedure Steps

Eyelid Surgery is normally performed under local anesthesia and takes one to three hours depending on the complexity of the procedure. The area around your eyes will be numb and you may be given a sedative to keep you relaxed. You will be awake during the procedure and might experience some minor discomfort, but you should be mostly calm. If your surgeon prefers to use general anesthesia, you will be completely asleep during the surgery. For upper eyelid surgery, generally an incision is hidden within the natural fold of the upper eyelid and extends slightly beyond the outside corner into the laugh lines or other existing creases. Through this incision, excess skin and fatty tissue are removed. Because the incision follows the natural contour of the upper eyelid, it usually is inconspicuous. For lower eyelid surgery, often an incision is hidden just below the lower lashes. Through this incision, excess skin, muscle and fat are removed, or fat may be redistributed to eliminate puffiness or bulges. Other adjustments to correct special problems such as muscle laxity may be performed. As in upper eyelid surgery, placement of the incision in natural crease lines allows for the scar to usually heal in an inconspicuous fashion. In some cases, you and your surgeon may decide that the best approach for removing excess fat is through an incision placed inside the lower eyelid. This technique requires no external incision, but it cannot be used to remove excess skin. A laser may sometimes be used in conjunction with this method to tighten the lower eyelid skin.

Blepharoplasty Recovery

Eyelid swelling and bruising under the eyes are common post-operative blepharoplasty side effects. This occurs within the first few days after eyelid surgery, though these can last up to two weeks. A rest regime, sleeping with your head elevated and using ice compresses, applied with pressure, can all speed up the healing process. You will be able to wear make up again after about two weeks, and return to sports and physical activities after three to four weeks. It is very important to avoid strong sunlight during your eyelid surgery recovery time, as the skin around the eyes will be even more sensitive than usual. Wear a sun cream with a very high SPF, sunglasses and hats for six to eight weeks after a blepharoplasty procedure.

Blephastaroply Side Effects & Risks

Some of the complications that can occur following Blepharoplasty include temporary swelling at the corners of the eyelids, hematoma, infection, changes in sensation, scarring, allergic reactions, or blurred vision for several days. There is also a chance that the incisions may heal asymmetrically. If tiny whiteheads appear following surgery, your doctor can easily remove them with a small needle. Some patients have difficulty closing their eyes completely when sleeping. Although this is very rare, in some circumstances it can be permanent. You will not be able to wear contact lenses for several weeks following surgery.

Blephastaroply Costs

The average cost of a Blepharoplasty is anywhere from $2800-4200, depending on the physician and areas treated.
