Forehead Lift Description & Benefits

A forehead lift (also called a  brow lift) is the surgical removal of excess fat and skin, and a tightening of the muscles in the forehead area. It can correct conditions associated with aging and sagging brows or deep furrows between the eyes. It is often done in conjunction with a facelift in order to create a smoother overall facial appearance. With age or excessive sun exposure, wrinkled creased skin can develop on the forehead. Forehead lift surgery cannot stop the aging process, but can improve the overall appearance of the face, making patients look refreshed and more youthful. Generally the procedure is performed on patients between 40 and 60 years of age. However, the forehead lift procedure can also be performed on younger adults who have developed furrows or frown lines due to stress, muscle activity, or inherited conditions.

Forehead Lift Procedure Steps

The forehead lift procedure usually takes between 30–90 minutes.  The surgery involves incisions in the hair-bearing scalp. Occasionally, incisions may be performed in the forehead, and/ or the upper eyelids. Once the incisions are made, various degrees of undermining of the skin are performed, and the deeper layers of the forehead are lifted. Muscles that depress the eyebrows may be disrupted and the skin and deeper layers are often then fixed or attached to the bone. The results are a reversal of the effects of gravity and tightening of soft tissues of the forehead to restore a more youthful contour to the upper face.

Forehead Lift Recovery

Following the surgery some swelling and bruising will occur within the first 10-14 days. In some patients, this condition may include the cheek and eye area as well as the forehead. You may develop black eyes temporarily. Painkillers for the first few days post-op are usually prescribed. It is advised to keep your head elevated, including sleeping propped up on pillows, and using cold compresses to reduce swelling.
