Juvederm Description & Benefits

Juvederm is a nonsurgical, physician-administered dermal filler treatment. Juvederm is a smooth non-animal dermal filler offering a natural look and feel, and long-lasting results for up to six months or longer. Juvederm is the only dermal filler currently available with the highest concentration of hyaluronic acid and a special formulation process. This process creates a smooth gel that flows easily into the skin, creating smooth, natural looks. The smooth consistency of Juvederm dermal filler also may help to minimize the discomfort that can sometimes occur during the injection procedure. Juvederm can help correct many types of facial lines such as frown lines, smoker's lines, marionette lines, worry lines (forehead lines), crow's feet, deep smile lines, cheek depressions, lip border re-definition, acne scars and certain facial scars. Juvederm treatments are not permanent. Over time, the body reabsorbs the additional hyaluronic acid and the effects fade. Patients will normally need top-up injections around two to three times per year. Juvederm treatments may be suitable for people who want to improve their facial appearance but do not want the cost, risk, or downtime associated with invasive cosmetic surgery.

Juvederm Procedure Steps

Juvederm is a non-surgical procedure that softens facial lines and furrows, such as those around the eyes and mouth. Tiny quantities of hyaluronic acid are injected through very fine needles, boosting the skin's own hyaluronic acid, which plumps up the treated skin. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in all living organisms. High concentrations are found in soft connective tissue and in the fluid surrounding the eye. In skin tissue, hyaluronic acid is a jelly-like substance that fills the space between collagen and elastin fibers. It is also present in some cartilage and joint fluids. Hyaluronic acid hydrates the skin by holding in water; aids the transport of essential nutrients from the bloodstream to living skin cells, and acts as a cushioning and lubricating agent against mechanical and chemical damage. Due to the natural aging process and other factors including pollutants, sunlight, fatigue and hormonal changes, the body's natural store of hyaluronic acid is degraded and destroyed over time, leading to facial furrows and wrinkles.

Juvederm Recovery

Juvederm treatments take around 15 to 30 minutes to administer. The effect of Juvederm on the treated areas is immediately obvious. The injection site may be, or may become red and swollen. Juvederm recovery time can be from a few hours to a few days. Most people can return to work straight away after treatment with hyaluronic acid dermal fillers. Normal activities can be usually be resumed immediately, and discomfort is minimal. The treatment site maybe a little swollen, and this may last a few hours. For the first 24 hours following treatment, you should avoid strenuous exercise, excessive sun or heat exposure, and consumption of alcoholic beverages in order to help minimize the risks of temporary redness, swelling, and/or itching at the treatment sites. After the treatment, some temporary injection-related reactions may occur, including redness, pain, firmness, swelling, and bumps. Studies have shown that these are usually mild to moderate in nature and clear up on their own in 7 days or less. If you experience swelling at the injection site, you can apply an ice pack for a brief period. Any discomfort, bruising or swelling can be treated with mild over-the-counter painkillers such as ibuprofen. Do not use aspirin as this may make the bruising worse. Your healthcare professional will tell you when makeup may be applied after your treatment. You should see an immediate improvement in the treatment areas. Most patients need one treatment to achieve optimal wrinkle smoothing. And one treatment could smooth your lines and wrinkles for up to 1 year. However, results may vary and correction is temporary. Supplemental “touch up” treatments may be required to achieve and maintain optimal results.
