Laser Hair Removal Description & Benefits

Laser hair removal permanently reduces the amount of hair growth by killing the hairs at the follicle. The latest treatments have greatly reduced the discomfort of the procedure and have improved the amount of hair reduction and procedure time. Because the laser energy is naturally attracted to dark colors, the best candidates for laser hair removal are those with very light skin and dark hair. Those with darker skin will benefit less because the darker pigment in the skin will absorb some of the laser light energy. To avoid burning or ineffectiveness, patients with darker skin may choose a different method of removal such as electrolysis. Laser hair removal usually does not work for those with light colored or red hair. Also, blonde or gray/white hair is less responsive due to lack of ample pigment in the hair. There is little to no downtime to this procedure and it treats larger areas effectively because it disables more than one hair at a time.

Laser Hair Removal Procedure Steps

Depending on the area being treated, the process may take anywhere from several minutes to several hours to complete. The most commonly used lasers utilize a low energy laser beam. This beam passes through the patient’s skin and is attracted to the pigment of the hair. The energy passes down the hair shaft and is absorbed by hair follicles that are in the active growth phase, thereby disabling the hair follicle in the deeper layer of the skin. The hair follicles that are in dormant phase are not affected by the treatment. In most cases, minimal pain should be experienced and no anesthesia is required.

Laser Hair Removal Recovery

Laser hair removal is an extremely safe and fast process and involves little or no recovery time. Most patients require a cycle of 3-8 treatments from over 10-24 months. Even following a treatment cycle, it is possible to experience some scattered regrowth. Because every person's growth pattern is unique, the amount of treatments will vary.
