Bloating can occur after any surgery due to the slowing down of the gastrointestinal system as well as fluid retention. This is due to the effects of anesthesia and analgesics used in the recovery phase. Typically these symptoms resolve in a couple of weeks, as the bowel function returns to normal.
If you have had a history of constipation in the past or your diet has changed it may take a bit longer. In this case patients often benefit from stool softeners and fiber rich foods, as well as exercise to help them along. If your symptoms persist, however, you should seek medical attention to rule out other processes.
