I have had to deal with this same issue myself. I can tell you the main causes for hair loss in women are:

Low Estrogen, Low Vitamin-D, Stress, Testosterone levels too high, Hypo-Thyroid Condition, and high Mercury levels.

I would have your doctor do a blood test for all of these, especially the hormonal check and the thyroid check. As we age it is very common for women to have a slightly low thyroid which is enough to cause hair significant hair loss.

With the thyroid check make sure to ask for a T3 and a T4 test, not simply the total number. I don't know where you live, but if you want I can recommend a very good doctor in the Santa Monica California area if you need a good recommendation.
