Dr. Alpha Male = No Thanks, November 30, 2007, 2:30 pm
Reviewer: twinbelly

I went to see Dr. Karp for a consultation (a $200 charge) about a tummy tuck. His super fancy office kept me waiting for over an hour and then I met with his office manager (who was wearing scrubs as if she was a medical practitioner). She took my information and had me disrobe. The doctor came in, removed my robe without even introducing himself and started poking and prodding. It was a very unsettling moment because I was so uncomfortable with my belly since my pregnancy and I got tears in my eyes. He actually asked me "why are you getting so emotional?" I couldn't believe how cold he was and I told him that he might be emotional if his body had been changed from carrying twins. He was dismissive and then excused himself from the room. His office manager came back and could tell I was upset but she just starting giving me the costs and telling me when the doctor was available. I stopped her midway and told her not to bother since there was no way Dr. Karp was going to touch me. She asked why and when I told her (still pretty teary and upset) her justification was that he is just a real alpha male. As if that is an excuse for being a jerk. The only nice thing I can say is that they didn't charge me the consultation fee because my experience was so horrible.

I recommend Dr. Nolan Karp in NYC, November 10, 2007, 10:59 am
Reviewer: sails

I needed abdominal surgery (hysterctomy) & decided it might be an ideal time to consider having a tummy tuck-- due to prior abdominal surgeries/incisions that had not healed properly. I asked my gyn office to recommend plastic surgeons who had OR privileges at NYU hospital so the 2 surgeries could be done at the same time. This saved me about 50% of the TT cost. I paid for the ps fee plus additional time for the OR & anesthesiologist.

I was given 3 names & chose Dr. Karp for the 1st consult. I never interviewed the other 2 surgeons because I felt EXTREMELY comfortable with Dr. Karp & his staff. After seeing so many PS shows on tv (where the ps is oily & the staff look plastic!) it was a relief to go meet with a competent ps surgeon who hires staff that are professional & normal-looking.

Dr. Karp recommended a mini-tuck (& added that he would not have considered the surgery for me EXCEPT that I would already be having surgery. Some ps, talk patients into their "next surgery"). I did not view any support sites prior to the surgery & if I had I might have chickened out: the post-op photos look so barbaric to me! The hysterectomy was my focus since it was the more complicated surgery & the harder recovery. Interestingly, I found Dr. Karp & his staff provided far better follow-up care than the gyn surgeon! Dr. Karp's staff initiated calls & returned my calls promptly. My experience was first rate!

Ironically, when I went to the gyn surgeon for my 1st post-op visit I was kept waiting for ONE HOUR! Also, during my 3rd week post-op I experienced INTENSE pain & was told BY A NURSE "it has nothing to do with the surgery. It's not normal" when, according to the gyn surgeon (at the next appointment), it was a clear indication that I was "overdoing it." Interesting, since that office had given me absolutely no post-op guidelines!

I highly recommend Dr. Nolan Karp.
