Silicone Implants - Beware, June 2, 2017, 4:11 am
Reviewer: sbrandow

I had silicone implants placed by a physician in Philadelphia in 1989. After having them for about 6 years my health started to decline. I was very young and was having medical problems that were far more common in the elderly. I was diagnosed with Epstein Barr (better known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) and was experiencing circulatory issues in my hands and feet. The specialist I was seeing for these issues was simply baffled by the radiating pain that was moving around my body. After many visits he asked if I had implants. I went back to the doctor who had done the procedure and he said that silicone was safe and that my breasts looked fine. I had a mammogram (which my insurance did not want to cover as I was not old enough for one) and the implants appeared to be intact. I went searching for answers. I met with Dr. Brandow and he said he had no idea what he might find, but he would remove the implants, replace them with saline and see if that resolved the problem. He removed them and found that there was silicone everywhere. He took pictures of it and it looked like butterscotch pudding. After a three hour surgery, he felt he had cleaned up the pocket and replaced them with Saline. I still have a few nodules that show up in mammograms! My symptoms were pretty much gone after 6 months. In the immediate post op period I experienced silicone blisters popping out of my skin on my chest and abdomen. No one can tell me that silicone is safe. I experienced first hand how sick these implants can make a person. When there is a safe alternative that is really no different in feeling, why would you want to compromise your long term health?

Dr. Brandow is not an extreme make-over surgeon and he will tell you that right up front. His goal is simply to make you look like you might have been on a vacation or to a spa. In other words, you'll look "refreshed" as opposed to a tight, Phyllis Diller look. In fact, he wouldn't even do my eyes and forehead because he didn't seem them as needing surgery just yet ... he said I'd look like I'd had a face lift he he did areas that weren't really quite ready for tightening. I respected his opinion and I loved the results!! I look younger for sure but even my very best friends couldn't tell that I'd had a face lift. They just knew I "looked different." Of course, I did tell most of them the truth but, since I'd changed hair-do's prior to the surgery, most just thought the "difference" was my hair! My idea of a perfect face lift! Dr. Brandow is simply the best in the greater Philadelphia area.
