I am a 65 year old healthy, physically fit woman now just 2 weeks after having had a breast lift/reduction by Dr. Alan Engler. For a life-time, even before adding insult to injury by breast feeding two babies, I hated (yes, hated) my pendulous breasts. Shopping for bras and bathing suits was always a frustrating and dissatisfying ordeal and I gave up even thinking about cute little tops and dresses with built-in bras - never mind anything strapless.
I finally decided to do something realizing that based on my family history I might well live another three decades or more with the drooping and discomfort just getting worse and worse. I am retired, but my entire career was in medicine and when I went to the internet to research plastic surgeons I thought I was pretty savvy. I wanted someone well trained, experienced, technically superb, and without any reportable incidents – I would be asleep during the procedure so personality/bed-side manner was not my main concern. I was so wrong. But, fortunately as I did my extensive research, one physician, Dr. Engler, stood out in terms of training, experience, outstanding reputation, and according to the testimonials also a very caring and compassionate individual. I made an appointment for an initial consultation and didn’t look any further. I cannot imagine finding a better surgeon or nicer person.
I was a 34D (a size many would like) and I always wore an underwire “minimizer” bra so I actually looked more like a C. The first appointment started with an open ended conversation. Dr. E asked me a lot of questions, thoroughly explained the breast reduction/lift surgery and answered all of my questions. The conversation flowed along and at times we even talked about living in Paris, urban parks and architecture. He was in no rush, easy to talk with, open, honest, nonjudgmental and unpretentious (sorry, but not what I expected in a surgeon). He certainly was not pushing me to have the surgery, and in fact, I had a feeling that he was wondering why I wanted a breast reduction. Next was the exam. I got undressed and he came back with his nurse. He took one look and said, “oh yes, we are going to do this and you are going to be so happy.”
Dr. Engler did the breast lift by removing excess skin leaving the actual breast tissue intact. I don’t think the reduction is very noticeable to others, but I feel completely different. I am wearing tops with built-in bras and I just bought two new sports bras – one because I liked the bright orange color and the other because it looked nice. I took them home without trying them on and what seems like a miracle to me both fit perfectly and are totally comfortable.
For me, making the decision to have voluntary cosmetic breast surgery was physically and emotionally more challenging than I expected. My husband and family were completely there for me but of the three friends I told only one was truly supportive. Having a surgeon who listened to me, who got to know me, who cared about both my physical and emotional well being and who was available and there for me every step of the way was important beyond words. Dr. Engler is a genuinely wonderful human being and a gifted surgeon. He was completely right. I am so happy.
