I am curious to know how many of you got to use steroid therapy after surgery and if so, do you feel it significantly reduced swelling and pain? Also, after you went off the steroids, did you start swelling?
Thanks!!

I don't know if the swelling would come back or not..... but I suspect the reason they wait to give it out is to give your body a chance to resolve the swelling issues on their own. I will be 4 weeks post op Fri and go in for my visit...I have dry eye syndrome and although it is getting better my vision at times is still so bad I can't drive....(I'm told this condition is due to swelling, however slight) I plan on asking for the pack...I feel enough is enough and I'm ready to get on with my life... I would be very interested to hear an answer to your question also....

posted by: LindaW | | Posted Wed, Feb 11 at 9:15 AM PST | I am having my procedures on the 18th of this month so I can't tell you how it went yet :) However, I CAN tell you that they are one of the BEST in the region and have set the standard across the country for cleanliness and sterility in a surgical center. They serve as a model for others. I am using Dr. Sigal and he has been very congenial and friendly. Go to their website at www.austinweston.com and take a look! I know that they do lots of the Senators and their wives as well as other wealthy folks in the area. If you are having multiple procedures done, they charge you full price on the first, then the others are all 50% off!!!! They do charge for anesthesia and for the or, but overall, they are quite reasonable. I have heard great things about them and feel you should consider them.

I am having a rhinoplasty, chin implant, lower neck sculpting and lift, mid face lift, lower eyes. It's all being done on the 18th. I will post back here afterwards as soon as I can and then give y'all a play-by-play. I also plan to set up a website where I can post before and after photos for y'all. I will include my bruised and battered self :)

posted by: abbysax | | Posted Fri, Mar 5 at 7:37 PM PST | Dear Pumpkin, I am in Northern Virginia as well and am at a loss for recommendations for a great facelift surgeon. I've read every book in the library and they all say to get recommendations from others who have had surgery, but I don't know anyone. I had a consult with two females, each with her own practice and then a consult with a surgeon at Austin-Weston. Austin-Weston was more than double the price of the other two; they were $6,000 - $7,000 while Austin was $15,000. Another interesting thing was that the two women insist on general anethsesia because of "patient comfort and safety," and Austin-Weston, I believe won't use general, but only twilight sedation. I'm curious, too, if there are surgeons in our area that focus primarily on the face; so far, the ones I've consulted with do all-purpose, breast augmentation, face, etc.
I am ready to schedule this (facelift, eyelid lift and perhaps brow or mid-cheek lift, and would appreciate ANY help in steering me to Reston/Herndon/Sterling/McLean surgeons that folks have had good experiences with - or not good experiences with! Thanks so much! |

posted by: Elaine | | Posted Tue, Feb 10 at 6:05 PM PST | | Hi, my ps gave me sterods drops and ointment for about 10 days for the bleph, He also gave me a steriod pack that I took for about 12 days for the fl etc. It helped immensely, I had very little swelling from the bleph compared to others, I did have a lot done so I had other swelling, but not nearly so much that I have read here. At 7 or 8 weeks when I was concerned about the swelling around my lips (from dermabrasion & alloderm) my ps said that he would be willing to put me back on a very small doseage of steroids for a limited time. He does not like steroids, but feels it helps greatly immediatly post-op. I did not elect to go back on a 7 weeks due to him really impressing how he felt about them, In that, he acknowledged that they really do reduce swelling in his opionion. This is a very personal choice, After finding this site post-op, my pre-op choice would be to absolutly take the steroids in a limited dosage for a limited time. I had blurry eye, but with the steroid drops and ointment at night for 10 days, it went away in about 3 weeks. Good luck - Do your homework |

What other work did you have done? Thanks for your input. I think the steroids in this short dose will be fine. My daughter has used them for asthma so I understand that short-term use isn't so much of an issue. The brain doesn't recognize them before 2 weeks according to my daughter's pulmonologist so I feel pretty safe. Also, it sounds as if the swelling really hits people hard regarding self-esteem!

posted by: Elaine | | Posted Tue, Feb 10 at 7:05 PM PST | | Wow, lots of work, it was one shot deal. A fl, nl, mid-fl, bl, bleph and lip aug, whew! My daughter has asthma too, so I wasn't fearful about steriods. I had a lot of work, but nobody thought I needed it. So it wasn't like I was getting rid of a turkey neck, because my neck looked great etc with other features, but as long as I was there.... The most important thing is that I only wanted to take off about 10-15 years (I will be 57 on 3/11), I did not want to look younger than my 31 year old daughter (okay really deep inside I do, but that is riduculous to me personally) Ther wasn't any fat removal and so on, and many of my proceedure I did were discounted as long as I was "under" etc. I also wanted to do everything at once so that it looked more natural (I came from Los Angeles and just saw too, too much). The outcome is a longer healing time and took me to the deepths of despair on some days when it came to self esteem. At those moments I tried to focus on someone who was in a serious accident and without choosing, just woke up looking and feeling that way. It really helped to get over myself. I now feel like I look great, but I do still have some moments.... Good luck, I think it is worth it. |
