posted by: beej | | Posted Wed, Aug 27 at 7:07 PM PDT | Hi Patriece, I had Thermage on August 15, 2003. Had my entire face and neck done with the exception of my forehead. My doctor turned the machine up as high as I could stand it to 16-1/2. Took about 40 minutes and it got somewhat painful at the end. My neck is still a little sore - but that's also my worst area for wrinkles. I'm looking forward to sseing my "before photos" in the next month. Beej |

My doctor said they happen occasionlly, are not dangerous and will dissolve over the next few months. Other than that I'm fine. I had the procdure in the morning and took the day off from work since I did not know how I'd react. Probably could have gone to work in the afternoon - my skin looke fine and I felt fine. Beej |

posted by: ariel | | Posted Tue, Sep 9 at 9:13 AM PDT | Hi ladies,
I hope the thermage results turn out to be great. As far as the bump-like cysts, this sounds like the side effects that occur after various other facial procedures such as a face lift and eyelid surgery. These bumps, lumps, and cyst formations that occur after such facial procedures may be due to irregular collagen buildup, swelling underneath the skin, and blood collections (this may not apply to thermage since there are no incisions). You can do manual massage on those lumps to help break them down, but they should disappear over a few months. Interestingly, some patients have used massagers/vibrators on their lumps. You can massage once or a few times a day for a few minutes each time. Also, you can use camouflage makeup to hide them if they are visible.
Please let us know about your progress, as we are currently starting to research this procedure for a possible patient education guide for preparation and recovery that we may create.
All my best,

posted by: compchic | | Posted Mon, Nov 24 at 8:30 PM PST | You should consider a Laser Genesis/Vantage photofacial! The Thermage machines only cost about $30,000 and the Genesis Laser costs over $100,000. I know a doctor who owns a cosmetic clinic and he showed me a book with prices of all the different machines available. All of his patients seem thrilled with their photofacial results (for redness, rosacea, small veins & caps, wrinkles, lines, etc). Plus they are very relaxing treatments with NO PAIN!!! I think here in Kansas City they go for $500 for a Photofacial so Thermage just seems like a rip-off! I have also seen studies on the internet that patients who did thermage had swelling for weeks and some had blistering. The reason that the Thermage doctors charge so much is because there are side effects that they can get sued for - so even though their machines are cheap, they still have to charge a lot to cover their butts.
READ THE COMMENTS OF THERMAGE PATIENTS AT http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/Forum36/HTML/001297-2.html
Go to the Thermage website:http://www.thermage.com/thermage/index.html They even have to say that it is possible that skin damage can occur because patients in their studies had problems. |

I have had Thermage and I can only say Wow! What a difference it made in my life. I too was considering a face lift, but with being in the work force I just couldn't take the time off. I had my procedure back in May of this year and at first I must say I was a little discouraged. After 3 months my Doctors, Dr. Dale Isaacson and Dr. Marilyn Berzin had me come in for a followup. The results were unbelievable. I did suffer some discomfort during the procedure, but they really did do everything to make me feel better. The staff there was so nice. They almost seemed like they new me by the way they were making sure I was not uncomfortable etc. I highly recommend this to anyone who is looking to an alternative to a face lift. posted by: isabelle | | Posted Wed, Sep 10 at 8:28 PM PDT | Hi,
Swelling and bruising are common symptoms after a cosmetic procedure and usually disappear in a few weeks (2 to 3 weeks in many cases). You should not feel much concerned about these symptoms but it is recommended to take some healing-friendly measures to reduce them.
To help reduce swelling, there are many tips that are worth following. First of all, it is recommended to stay elevated while sleeping or resting in a 30-45 degree position. To be more comfortable, you should consider using a bed wedge like many journeywomen and men. You can see various bed wedges and other elevation pillows in the Recovery & Comfort Pillows aisle of our store at the following link: http://www.makemeheal.com/mmh/product/facelift/pillows/elevation/index.vm?procid=7&catid=24&subcatid=140
Another important accessory against swelling and bruising is an ice pack, also called cold/hot compress. As it is highly recommended to ice the swollen areas for the first days post-op, using a face compress is a good and comfortable solution as it is lighter than crushed ice in a plastic bag, does not leak and mold better the contours of the face. Moreover, these cold/hot compresses can be used warm to reduce bruising discolorations when the swelling is less considerable by allowing the skin to absorb bruises. These cold/hot packs are very popular as patients appreciate their easy use during recovery. To get more details and get these compresses, you can find a full discussion in the Cold/Hot Therapy aisle of the store at: http://www.makemeheal.com/mmh/product/facelift/therapy/index.vm?procid=7&catid=23
Some homeopathic remedies are also very popular to reduce swelling and bruising, such as Arnica Montana, Bromelain and Grape Seed extract. They are usually taken the day after the surgery (some patients even start before the surgery) up to 2 weeks post-op. Arnica Montana help minimize bleeding, postoperative bruising, scar healing, and muscle soreness. A considerable number of patients have said that the use of arnica has definitively helped speed up their recovery by lessening the effects of swelling. Bromelain is a natural enzyme extracted from pineapple that may reduce swelling, lessen postoperative pain, and accelerate the healing process. Grape Seed Extract can improve skin elasticity, repair skin, connective and muscle tissue, replenish blood vessels, as well as enhance collagen and elastin production. Although it may not directly reduce swelling, taking grape seed extract may promote tissue repair—damaged tissues being one of the causes of swelling, and reduce inflammation.
Also, it is a good idea to avoid hot water and salty food for a few weeks and especially as long as swelling is significant as they could interfere with the healing process and might potentially increase swelling.
Good luck in your recovery,
Isabelle Make Me Heal http://www.makemeheal.com

posted by: beej | | Posted Thu, Sep 11 at 3:18 PM PDT | Hi Maew, The injections probably caused the down time - not the Thermage. I only used the numbing cream. I had no swelling or bruising and my doctor turned the machine up to 16-1/2. When I go back to have my forehead done I'm going to go through the same procedure. By the way, it's only been a month and the fine lines under my eyes are disappearing - very cool. beej |

posted by: ariel | | Posted Fri, Sep 12 at 11:40 AM PDT | Hi Maew,
As far as when to apply warm/hot compresses, you can do that towards the latter part of the first week as long as swelling is not considerable. Since your eyes are not swollen, you can apply the compress there and if your swelling is down a bit in other facial areas, you can venture to those areas as well. However, when you apply a cold or hot compress be sure to put some kind of towel or sheet as you do not want the skin to be in direct contact with the hot compress. Also, massaging the bruising gently can break down the discolorations.
It seems from all of you that the injections are what cause the bruising and that swelling and irritation are the real side effects of thermage itself when a numbing cream is used.
Let's keep talking about this, as it will benefit everyone. We will ultimately be coming out with some patient education on a variety of different non-surgical cosmetic procedures, including thermage.

This is a general idea of prices. Eyes 1800.00 Mid Face 2000.00 Mid face and neck 2500.00 Full Face 3500.00 Full face and neck 4000.00

posted by: compchic | | Posted Mon, Nov 24 at 8:17 PM PST | This seems extremely expensive. You should look into a laser or pulsed-light photofacial. I had unbelievable results. And a Thermage machine only costs $30,000 and a Vantage/Genesis Laser (what I had done for about $300 per treatment) costs over $100,000. I know the doctor who owns a clinic in my town and all the patients have been extremely happy with it. I think you get what you pay for. And the laser treatment doesn't hurt at all. It is very relaxing. (He recommends 5 treatments total). I heard a lot of people say they had major swelling and some blistering with Thermage. Anyone here have that? |

posted by: nerak | | Posted Sat, Sep 20 at 11:34 AM PDT | Hi! I am just now checking back...sorry for the late response! I had my thermage procedure done appx. one week ago In Alpharetta (just north of Atlanta) at Dr. Tiffany Hamilton's office (Dermatology & Vein Institute, 770-360-8881...they have a website, www.dermandvein.com). I researched this websight as well as every other place I could think of before going. My whole face was $1000.00 (a bargin compared to other ads I have seen for the procedure!). The technician who does the work told me she had never had any real problems after giving the procedure. I had the machine turned up to 16 on several points on my face! As I said before, they gave me numbing cream, a valium, and lortab. It made the thermage treatment very tolerable! I can already tell a slight difference (but no one else knows!)....I hope to see more results as promised in the next several months! I had no pain, no swelling afterwards. I feel fine....I highly recommend this office for this procedure (as well as any other dermatology treatments). To the person who posted that she didin't think these were true responses....I am a real 41 yr. old mother of 3 who has had the treatment, and is satisfied!!!:) I wish I had seen the segment on Oprah (yes,it is also called thermacool)-I missed it! Hope this helps! Nerak

posted by: ChronicTea | | Posted Mon, Sep 29 at 4:36 PM PDT | | I am also in Atlanta and had my entire face done four months ago. The neck area had not been "approved" at that time so the doctor stopped at the jawline. I am 45 years old and lucky enough to be blessed with great genes. I have great skin and good habits and look around 35, but I see a little bit of sagging starting at the jowls and neck. I had already been to a plastic surgeon about a face/neck lift since I'm pretty terrifed of aging. So when I first heard about thermage I jumped on it really fast hoping to avoid the inevitable. It cost me $1500.00. It hurt like hell. I was bruised from the injections for almost two weeks. But I was very excited to see what was going to happen over the next few months. I really don't want to be discouraging but frankly I can't tell a difference in my face at all. I've had lots of progressive photos taken since May. But I'm glad I tried it. I wish it had been that miracle cure. My only advice is that if you expect thermage to give you what a traditional facelift will give you then reconsider. The old adage of too good to be true is certainly applicable at least in my case. |

microdermabrasion is a completely diffent procedure and results. it sluffs off the dead layers of skin on the outer/upper dermis,,while thermage heats/stimulate the lower dermis,,,way in your skin,,stimulating collegen hopefully.

posted by: llarsen | | Posted Thu, Sep 18 at 10:45 PM PDT | Had Thermage Sept 8 on my forhead, around my eyes, halfway on my checks and at the smile lines. Dr. used numbing cream and also injections on my forehead. He warned I might bruise from the injections, not from the Thermage. I could not feel anything on my forhead, but did feel some heat on my cheeks for a few seconds. Well worth the discomfort. I saw immediate results on my forhead. Both lids did swell that evening, but were fine in the morning. The small amount of bruising was easily hidden with makeup and eye shadow. My forehead is still smoother than before, although a few creases are reappearing on my forehead, as I tend to raise my eyebrows alot when applying makeup and doing my hair. (Never realized it until now) The biggest change I see is that my upper lids have raised, and the fine wrinkles around my eyes much smoother. One side of my cheek has much softer smile line than the other, hopefully the other will catch up. My family says they can see a difference, but no one else has noticed. I'm very happy with the results so far and am considering having my lower face and neck done. I'm having Microdermabrasion with Sensi peel tomorrow, for the first time.

My neck is lifting a small amount and the lines under and around the bottom of my eyes are disappearing. There was also a bulge in my chin that I hadn't realized had gone away. He said my skin will continue to improve over the next few months. Am going back to see him in another month for new photos. So far I am very pleased. Beej |

I have to say on behalf of my Dermatologist, I was very well informed. Before I could even have the procedure done, I had to go to the office for a free consultation. At that time I was given all of the ins and outs of the procedure and was also given the opportunity to ask any questions I had. I was also given different web sites to contact for more information as well as the telephone number of a patient who had the procedure. The doctor I used was in Washington, D.C. (Dale Isaacson, M.D. 202-822-9591). I think it is important to find the right doctor and feel comfortable with the ability of the doctor as well as the office staff.

It is almost like it has "plumped" up the area, without being swollen at all...if that makes any sense! Make sure you meet Melissa, the technician who actually does the procedure, while meeting with the dermatologist. She is very nice, I asked her a million questions before I committed to having the thermage. Many of the girls in the office there have done this treatment...including both doctors! I am sure you will be pleased....let me know what you think! Good Luck! Karen |

My twin girls turn 1 the weekend after the treatment hope I won't be red or swollen for it. (My other one is a 4 year old boy) Have you had any other treatments with that office? I started the baby thing a bit later in life and had quite a bit of fertility treatments which combined with the hormones from pregnancy has left my face with brown spots all over and in poor condition. I'm hoping to go in for the Thermage, and see what else they recommend. Then as we go back for a follow up on the Thermage (When do they want to see you again to check results? Did they take "before" photos?) Have a chemical peel or something. I don't want to combine the procedures for fear of a bad reaction and also spread out the $ of all this. best - sharon |

I was a flight attendant for 17 yrs, so I think it really dried out my skin and hence, more wrinkles (with all the smile lines!). Dr. Hamilton's office has all sorts of skin treatments---they are known for their cosmetic dermatology. But, I also recommend them for skin checks etc... She did an excellent evaluation on my mole check this past year too. I think you will be very happy there..they are very informative. I also had botox around my crows feet, and deep burrow wrinkle between my eyes. LOVED the results! I am going to try some facial rejuvination next for fine lines, etc...I'm not sure how we are going to go about it yet! As far as my htermage, it has been 2 weeks this friday....I am seeing slight improvements! I hope they continue! Good luck with your appt---I'm sure you'll be fine there. K. |

A face lift will give you good results For SURE if you have a good surgeon. My procedure was done almost 8 weeks ago, I see no improvement in my neck area. My forehead shines and might be a touch smoother, but then I had Botox, too. If I had it to do over again, I wouldn't. $2,500 is too much to pay for a procedure that Might show some small improvement in 6 months...and I only needed a little bit of tightening in the neck area., so far I see none. Oh well...REad on and the majority don't really have good results. Good luck whatever you decide |

posted by: Sylvie | | Posted Tue, Sep 23 at 1:14 PM PDT | | Hi just had my thermage procedure (full face) this morning. And I have to say that what you may have seen on Oprah was a bit minimized. At times I didn't feel anything but at point it hurt A LOT. Let me be clear, A LOT...this is coming from some one who went the natural route for childbirth. (In fact, I found the breathing techniques I learned for that experience helpful.) I did a lot of research beforehand, and I really trust my dermo (he did the procedure, with a technician in the room too), so I talked to him extensively about what he is seeing for results. I am only in my late 30's, so I am not looking for a miracle, more preventative maintenance. I had only the numbing cream and afterward I was definitely pink, but I went to work and no one seems to be giving me funny looks. My face does still feel tender in some areas, but by tomorrow I think I will feel fine. He used 13 and 15 as settings and did two passes in certain areas. |

posted by: beej | | Posted Wed, Sep 24 at 4:35 AM PDT | Hi Sylvie, I too had only the numbing cream and towards the end of the procedure it hurt quite a bit. I think this could have been due to the high settings and the numbing cream wearing off. My settings were at 16-1/2 on my neck. When it went down to 14 for my cheeks there was almost no discomfort. Unless someone really cannot tolerate pain, I would not let it stop me from doing this again. The pain and downtime from plastic surgery must be much worse. Beej |

I just wanted to share that there is definitely pain involved...but only during the procedure. My dermo told me beforehand that areas where the skin is thinner or there are more nerve endings are worse in terms of pain. But in the eyebrow area, for example, I felt almost nothing. Now I just hope it works, since the total cost was $1700! |

posted by: 3kidslater | | Posted Mon, Sep 29 at 2:25 PM PDT | Hi Ladies, I had the Thermage procedure done this morning on my lower face. I had just the numbing cream (which you have on your face for about 45 min to 1 hour before they start the treatment.) I was told in their experience to see improvement you really need to have the setting above 15 ! (25% of the patients saw no change, 75% saw good results, and 25% saw excellent results) So they do a little test spot to let you feel what 15 feels like, what 16 feels like, 16.5, 17, 17.5 etc. You tell them what you can handle.
I asked about doing two passes at a lower setting but was told one pass at the higher setting seems to be what they are seeing to get good results. So I went for it and did 17 on all the NF lines (My worst area of concern, also very sensitive) My cheeks and jaw line at 17 and went to 15 for under the eyes and chin at 15.5 as it's much more sensitive. At 14 and 15 I barely felt anything -- I found 16, 16.5 and 17 all to be about the same pain so I went for the higher setting.
Now for the pain. Yes for me it was pretty painful, the best way to describe it is a very short sting (of course 100's of them) one at a time all over. I was given stress balls to squeeze which was helpful! If anyone has the old metal fillings in your teeth and as ever accidentally had a bit of aluminum foil touch the filling -- you know that feeling? That's what the pain is like ever so sharp but quickly over then they hit ya again. I had two passes at 17 on each of the NF areas. Now 6 hours later would have to say it is manageable pain.
I have slight swelling under my eyes and in my cheek area the NF folds are looking much softer already but this may be because of the slight swelling. I've seen quite a few friends this afternoon no one noticed anything so I think the swelling is very minimal just noticed by myself. Will let you all know what the results are like..... Hope this is helpful .
Nerak many thanks for all your postings -- you were absolutely right Melissa is wonderful!!! |

posted by: 3kidslater | | Posted Wed, Oct 1 at 5:01 AM PDT | Thanks for the inquiry. I'm doing a little better but must admit the swelling got much worse over the first 24 hours and I still look very swollen. The office said it was pretty rare to see this much swelling but it actually is a good thing. The swelling is the collagen rebuilding or something like that. I can also feel little bumps under my skin (You can't see them but I can feel them in the spots we hit twice.) These bumps are also apparently a good sign. Did you feel any? Melissa said if you are to experience swelling and most don't but at the higher settings you certainly can it peaks between 24 and 48 hours then starts to get better. I think the worst for me is now over and it's coming down. Still enough to look like a chipmunk if I smile. Hopefully tomorrow it will be gone. Glad to hear you are doing well and pleased with the results. Hope your results continue to be good! :) - S |

Your results should start to show pretty soon now -- I'm hoping this will be well worth all the swelling and the $$ I too was very interested in the other rejuvenation laser treatments offered. (And they have a great special for this month!) My only concern is the side effects of the laser treatments are all swelling. As it looks like I'm prone to puff up like a blow fish I'll be very cautious on what else I do. I'll probably have to stick with the chemical peels which take longer to work but will have less down time. Keep us posted on your results. :) |

I am doing somewhat better, still swollen, but not as bad. (I did use the ice packs for probably 1 hour) The area above my left eye is blue-ish purple. I am 51 years old by the way. I had my forehead done and around my eyes and neck and jawline. The cost was $2025 and included Botox. ( I had never had that before). The Botox was part of the package, I hadn't asked for that. Actually I was always afraid of trying that. The procedure was really painful around my temples. I think my forehead looks smoother, but could that be the Botox? Probably. I am hoping for a tighter neck, was a little bit saggy skin there. Will keep everyone posted as far as improvement and swelling, etc. Hope we all get good results. |

I saw really quick results from the botox---it really improved my crow's feet! I have had it done 3 times (I needed a new dose every 3-4 months). I am about 1 month out now from my thermage treatment...I can see minor improvement. I hope I continue to see more from the $$$ I spent! Hope your swelling has gone down! Nerak |

posted by: boatie | | Posted Mon, Oct 6 at 9:38 AM PDT | | Hi Nerak, I guess I like the Botox too, because I do see improvement in my forehead, no wrinkles and around my eyes, too. My eyebrows are raised some too, which is from the thermage maybe? I wonder how much money the Botox costs. My whole fee was $2025 for Botox injections and thermage on forehead, eye area(crows feet) and chin-jaw and neck area. My swelling has gone down a lot, is almost normal now. The saggy area was the platysmal muscle area (don't know how to spell that word but it is something like that) and because of the swelling, it looks good now. I hope it continues to look good and improve. If the swelling goes all the way down, it will look saggy there again unless the thermage were to tighten the area...but it looks pretty good now...improved anyway. we will see. Take care and hopefully we all will see improvement for the next 6 months... |

p.s. if we aren't happy, hopefully our doctors can do something to make up for it, but I think we might be happy, most of what I have read has been pretty positive. I have a really nice doctor here in Peoria, Illinois and he tries to please us. Have a good week. |

my cheeks are sore to touch, even when i use my cleanser and moisturize. i still have a lump in my left cheek. i've heard that bruising indicated collagin forming and 'plumping up'. i feel it most when i try to sleep on my side.
microdermabrasian will make your skin look beautiful, more even toned, but it doesn't 'tighten' or build collegin, which is what thermage is supposed to do.
i don't notice a difference at this point, still have all my lines and wrinkles..tho i didn't have many, and haven't seen any 'lift' from my minimal droopyness. (i had thermage on lower face only) i did have 'radiance' injected into my NF lines, and i still have lines.
i paid $1250 for thermage, got a discount of $175 for my 'consult' and paid $1500 for the radiance which should last 2-4 years. it looks the same tho. "i'm a basketful of tears!"

I know the doctor is 500 miles away, but maybe you should have him check out the lump and he might be able to do something about it, maybe it is a cyst and could be drained or something? I sent you email at your address and sent you a copy of part of an article which says it takes 4 months for the collagen to rebuild itself or something like that. Did you get your email? I hope we all will be okay. My swelling has gone down but my eye is still pretty purple, but my neck does look better, although it is still a little bit swollen...like I said before if the swelling goes completely down, my neck would probably start sagging again...only time can tell if this is going to work and it does take time...the articles say up to 6 months. Probably in time the price will go down too, like with the eyes lasik has really gone down here in Peoria. It used to be $5000 to get your eyes done, now it is like $2500-$3000. Take care and don't get discouraged...but call your doctor or go and see him...he probably can do something to help you. |

I sent you part of an article that says it takes 4 months for the collagen to start rebuilding itself before you see any real improvement. Did you get that? I hope you are doing better...each day is a healing day I guess. My swelling is going down every day but I still have quite a purple eye. My neck does look better, but if all the swelling goes down it may start to look like loose skin in the one area. Take care. |

I have not seen any real results yet. My eyebrows do look raised and my forehead seems smoother, but then this dr. had the Botox be part of it. I read somewhere that it takes 4 months for the collagen to rebuild or something like that. It has only been a week and a half since I had the procedure done. You should probably wait. It isn't FDA approved for the lower face but it is approved for the forehead. Actually my neck, to me, sometimes looks better, sometimes no difference, sometimes looks worse,,,so I don't know what to tell you...but the safe thing to do would be to wait. I sure hope Maew is doing okay, she was in a lot of pain, etc and I hope she is okay. I know some doctors here in Illinois don't approve and think it isn't worth the money. Dr. Soderstrom of skin dimensions doesn't think it does very much....so you have to weigh it...It was very expensive, too. On the other hand, if in 6 months we would look great, it would be a different story. I am not as optimistic as I was at the beginning...time will tell. I would wait, it is the safe way to go, see how you look in 6 months. |

How are you doing Maew? I hope okay. I will try to write you a note again and see if it gets to you, I don't know what happened, because you should have received all my notes. Take care |

Drs sure have us by where they know it hurts don't they, sensitivity to looking older, as is natural. I don't mind doing a little to improve things but the claims that are made for huge $$$ feels so exploitive. I like your attitude, lets work more at acceptance than erasing ourselves. Maybe if we all did that these Drs would would have to go into another line of business that actually contributes soemthing valuable to our society instead of perpetuating the intolerance of not looking perfect. And we could put our money and time into something more constructive too. Just a thought. |

I think my skin looks healthier and maybe more toned but hard to pinpoint exact areas. Just overall looks better. I had thermage on 7/17 . Full face for $2,500. (no neck). The doctor did it on level 16. I was given the cream, valium and a shot for pain. It was still very painful. And I have a high pain tolerance. This was not a lunchtime procedure. I looked fine when I left but was swollen at night and for 10 days. Jaw line was sore for a bit. He wants to do a second treatment. Told me before hand that a second treatment at 4 - 5 months after 1st treatment will give better results. He wants to do it on level 13 this time. I will do a second treatment. Also very exciting - they are coming out very soon with a thermage tip in order to do right under the eyes. I will definitely do that. Wish it wasn't so expensive. |

I just had a consult with Donna at Dr. Isaacson's office and will be having the entire face done on Friday afternoon. That's right, all three sections for $4,500. I am 53 years old, but usually people guess 43 at the most. But a couple of years ago, most would have guessed 33. So I have sought an answer to slow down, and perhaps reverse some of this rapid aging...something to give me back "possibilities", something to give me back my smile.
They are considering me a prime candidate because I have never smoked, always stayed out of the sun (spent a lot of time in the theatre as a lighting and scene designer), and have not waited too late in my life where there wasn't enough collagen to increase (you need existing collagen for best results). So everyone is very hopeful.
I will keep everyone informed of my progress. Please say a prayer for me and for the miracle I am hoping for.
Donna told me that there was quite a bit of pain involved, but the Valium and Tylenol 3 would help (they don't use the numbing cream any longer). I told her that compared to the one I love telling me that I was too old for her, the pain involved would be no comparison.
Your new friend, Steve |

posted by: goodfela | | Posted Wed, Oct 22 at 7:19 AM PDT | I had my treatment done yesterday. I experienced NO pain at all. In fact, I thought the treatment felt good! I sat for one hour with the numbing cream, and that was entirely sufficient. I think the doctor said he used a setting of 16 1/2. I guess my face was a bit swollen afterwards, but not enough that anyone would notice. I have no discomfort today. As for the results (I had mid-face and neck), I'll be anxious to see if there are any. I had the cool laser treatment done about a year ago, and the pain there was intolerable, though the same numbing cream was applied beforehand. I paid $2,500 for the mid-face and neck. Don't let the anticipation of pain turn you off.

I hope you get good results..the results vary from person to person. I had lower neck and forehead done 3 weeks ago for $2025 (this included Botox-which I had never used) and I see improvement in forehead, but that might be the Botox. This procedure is so new and actually not approved for the lower face area. It is only FDA approved for the forehead. You are spending so much for a procedure that sometimes only shows minimal improvement. Why not do a facelift if spending that much money? I hope we all get really good results and everything goes well for you. Did you read all the responses from everyone who had the procedure done. Another good place to go that shows people's responses is www.healthboards.com. check that one out too. I just think that is a lot of money to spend for such an ify procedure. Good luck. |

Well, I just got back. They had given me 2 tylenol 3, and about 45 minutes later, 2 valium. Unfortunately, I am one of those people who always seem to need another shot of novocaine at the dentist, and don't seem to feel the effects of many drugs unless doses are increased (it takes me 3-4 sleeping pills to get drowsy). I probably should have said something, because I really wasn't not feeling anything. Another tylenol would have been a good thing, and probably another valium.
But the pain was pretty bad at time, but I didn't find tears running down my cheeks or anything. But I did start to give those rubber balls in my hands a workout sometimes. Keep in mind that I did opt to have all three areas down at the same time. Some of you might consider only one section at a time.
Afterwards, I went to a restaurant and had a nice dinner...it is probably a good idea not to have a lot to eat before the procedure. I had a decent breakfast, but skipped lunch. Afterwards I took the metro (45 minute trip) to my car, and then was fine to drive home.
I have absolutely no pain, or itching, or any other discomfort. There is a bit of reddness, but no more than you might get from being in the sun a bit too long. As far as immediate results--well it seems as though my brows have lifted a bit, and my jaw edges seem a bit more defined. But nothing very overt. Nobody has noticed any changes, other than my new haircut (I did that on purpose so that it would be a distraction from any possible change).
They said I will sleep very soundly tonight. That would be nice.
Tomorrow will be a good test, because I will be seen by quite a number of my store regulars. However I really do not expect anyone to really notice. Usually it takes a good 2 months before things really start to show a change. In my case, the gradual process will be very good, as I am in the public eye quite a bit.
Everyone at the doctor's office were great, they even let me have a cd I bought playing on the stereo during the procedure (very calming, almost meditative music). I even took off my shoes to fully relax. About the only improvement I would make would be to add murals to the walls--it would make the room feel a bit more comfortable. I have seen this done in dentist offices and it is very effective.
All of the staff was excellent! They made me very comfortable, answered all questions, and explained everything that could possibly be asked in clear terms. I guess the most impressive part of the experience was knowing that virtually the entire staff has had the procedure done. They freely showed the before pictures of themselves, and explain what was done and shared everything about their own experience.
It will be interesting to see changes as the days and weeks go by.
About the ony other procedure that I plan to have is lasering a few spider veins on each side of my nose and a bit on my chin. I will begin that at the first checkup from the thermage. That process is quite simple and not very painful.
As far as other things, like hair transplants, I really am not concerned that much about that. That is one area where I tend to agree with many posters here...that natural loss of some hair is something that I can't do much about, is quite gradual, and also very expensive to "fix". Fortunately I do tend to have a pretty good head of hair, and tend to wear it a bit long, so there is plenty to "comb over".
The rest of me will continue to learn to again smile, and again find confidence in seeking out women who will enjoy my company.
No matter what age they might be.
I will keep you posted.

How will I cope if this goes on for weeks? It is not painful but the fact that it was a droopy eyelid is why I had it done in the first place. Just one eye $750.00. I hope the swelling is gone by tomorrow because frankly I look like a freak and I'm scared. I was supposed to have it done surgically but chickened out twice. Although thermage was somewhat painful I would endure a lot more pain to look better. (and may have to) I hope I heal like they say I will. Ate a lot of salty things today (unusual) that may be making it worse. Also slept a lot and need to sleep elevated. (ha) Think twice. Then think again. SuzeeQ |

Could they put me in touch with someone who had it done and was pleased with the results? Sure, they could do that.BUT they didn't.When they sent me a form to fill out and accidentally sent to me another patients private forms and info I panicked and cancelled. He may be a brillant doctor but if the staff handle things in this manner I lose the courage to proceed with that doctor. So I tried thermage with a dermatologist. Have to admit the wrinkles on that side are diminished and the skin looks tighter..just had this done Nov 14 but my face distended and swelled so badly I have a saddlebag under the right eye where there was none before. If that goes away it will have been worth it.If not, it was a mistake. SuzeeQ |

posted by: nikster | | Posted Thu, Nov 13 at 9:12 AM PST | I just had it done a Lazrsmooth in Austin- the only place that offers Thermage. It was quite painful, despite Valium and Demerol, plus one hour of numbing cream. My face is swollen today, not badly, though. Had entire face done- the worse part was on the lower face. I have a couple of dark spots on my temple, probably from pulling away from the tip in pain. One brow is lifted the other is not, but it has been only one day. I liked the doctor- he does the procedure- which I prefer. He does not go over a 15 setting, the highest on me was I think 14. I cannot comment on whether or not it is worth the pain at only one day after treatment. The cost was $3100 for whole face- much more that what I have seen advertised on this forum. But not a lot of choices since he is the only doctor in Austin to do it...

Also, do you know why your doc decided not to use the numbing cream?

posted by: Kosette | | Posted Fri, Nov 28 at 10:07 AM PST | Hi Chris45, The lumps sound terrible. Did they give you numbing shots in the facial area, and did you have a sedative or anything like that? What setting did they use on you? It's really weird because some people have had good responses and others get terrible side effects like yours. It's hard to tell why the response is so different. I am 3 days out and I was afraid of swelling and looking weird at Thanksgiving, so I used ice packs and took anti-inflammatories all that day. You may want to try alternating ice and heat packs, maybe it's still swollen. I'm sorry about your situation, and I wish you the best. Take care. |

I have high pain tolerance and I screamed and actually bit my own hand and broke the skin !! R side of face was aat 15.5. L side he lowered it cause I begged him to. Bumps are worse on R side, and you can see the grid shape that he used. They are right where he zapped me. It took an hour and he did second pass at lower setting. Thank god I didn't have my eyes done, I'd be blind.

posted by: genamaria | | Posted Tue, Dec 9 at 2:30 PM PST | | Here are my observations: very few doctors have their own patients pictures on the Internet, the same tired pictures appear over and over. At more than a year since FDA approval, there should be more before and after pictures. Secondly, you are really taking a chance on a variety of negative reactions if you have Thermage. The lumps are much more common than the professionals have led you to believe. I had the procedure on lower face and neck 12/01/03. The procedure was painful, but not unbearable. I used numbing cream and some chewable sedatives. Some lumps appeared immediately and others later. The swelling took up the slack in my jowls and made me a little fat faced on bottom -started diminishing within one week. Lumps are not visible at this time, but I can feel them on face and neck. My lower jawbone is very tender. I read everything in print on the Internet prior to the procedure, so there were no surprises. I am very fair, 56 years old, have great skin and anticipate a good result. I will have a facelift eventually, hoping newer collagen will make the facelift results more successful and less pulled looking. Because I have concerns about radio frequency in general, I probably will not have the procedure a 2nd time. This was pretty drastic for me. |

I opted to cancel my appointment and not have treatment at all. I may change my mind if there are some upgrades and new innovations with the Thermage machine. There always seems to be improvements to the technology after it's been around awhile -- Like better lipo instruments, less aggresive lasers, etc. |

posted by: tabitha | | Posted Thu, Dec 4 at 9:13 PM PST | | I had the treatment today at 1:00 p.m. in Houston. It is 11:00 p.m. and all I have noticed is a slight bit of swelling along my right jawline. I was around people all evening and no one noticed. THe procedure was painful but my Dermotologist was great. She asked me what I could tolerate and reminded me that if it is done at a certain setting on one side of my face it would have to be done the same on the other. Forehead and cheeks were easy, 14.5, temple area 13.5, jawline was 13 and neck was the worse at 12.5. She said I might have slight swelling along jaw line and they also provided ice packs after the procedure. It's funny, I read a lot of these messages prior to having the procedure and after all the bad results it made me nervous about it. I showed up early, asked her more questions, told the Dr. about these messages and she reminded me that few people will tell about the GOOD, only the BAD, which is true in this case. She was very surprised to hear about the comments and reactions people were having. Be sure to check out your doctors, make sure they are Board Certified and ask a lot of questions, also talk to the other nurses and administrative staff to get their input. It was helpful. We'll see how the next few days go. |

posted by: aloha | | Posted Sat, Dec 27 at 10:53 AM PST | Hi, everyone. I'm new to this board and thought I should share my experience with this procedure. I had it done on November 29 by a doctor who is an otho/laryncologist but who also specializes in facial plastic/reconstructive surgery. He has the most experience of all the doctors who are doing the procedure here in Hawaii.
I was given an oral pain killer, a numbing cream was applied, and then he started the procedure 45 minutes later. He said that based on my skin thickness he would not go higher than 13.5 jouls on most parts of my face and would go lower on the sensitive parts (neck, lower eyelid). While he was doing the procedure, he knew exactly where I would feel the pain the most and let me know to brace myself. The pain was tolerable and lasted a few seconds. I think I had a slight swelling in my face the first week. I say "I think" because my face actually looked pretty good since the "swelling" seemed to have made my face/skin look tighter. My neck was also slightly swollen and tender to the touch. No one noticed the swelling although a friend I hadn't seen since June told me a week after the procedure that I looked ten years younger (She doesn't know I had the procedure done.) The swelling gradually disappeared after a week and I have definitely noticed a gradual tightening in my skin since then. The naso/labial fold is softer, my jawline is tighter, and the puffiness around my mouth is better. I am going back on 12/29 for my one-month post-op checkup. I'll see my 'before' photos and compare them to my post-op ones to see just how much my face has improved. Also, for those who are sick of seeing the same old before/after photos, check out www.lastingskinsolutions.com for their photos. I'm not sure if those are pics of their own patients, though. Also, the thermage company has updated their website with new pictures so check those out also. Hope this helps. Personally, I am happy that I had this done and am looking forward to seeing gradual improvements as the months go on. |
