Hi, I'd been having botox to my forehead for two years without complication, then in Dec 04 i had a droop in my right eyelid lasting 5 months. In June this year I asked my consultant whether I should risk botox again and she said yes it was very unlikely to reoccur so I went ahead and had only 15 units. Now 6 months later I have lowered eyebrows and a 4mm droop to the right eye and 2mm droop to the left eye. Today I paid to see a neurologist who said it is unlikely that the problem will resolve as in his opinion I have withered the muscle fibre in eyelids and forehead with repeated use of botox. He said this is commonly known to happen after using for a couple of years. Yet the consultant who injected me has been having it herself for 8 years with no ill effect. He suggested a brow lift and eyelid surgery but the consultant swears it should wear off in 8 to 12 months. Please has anyone heard of botox lasting this long or of anyone suffering similar ill effects. I cannot believe that a procedure heralded as safe and temporary could cause permanent damage. I look awful, have lost all confidence, please can anyone offer any information?

WOW! Sounds like you really have big problems and I really feel for you BIG TIME! My closest friend has had Botox numerous times (for years), and never has had any ill effects. Usually when you have such bad results, it's because the injections went to close to the optic nerve areas. In other words, it's the fault of your injector. I hope your eyes improve and no suregery is needed. Be patient!

I think it's the lowered brow that is causing the droop as folds of skin now sit on the eye and no hollow to lift back into where there used to be. Any info you glean from anywhere on people taking long time to recover warmly received. Thanks for your good wishes

I am so sorry to hear what has happened to you. I can only hope it resolves itself. Is this a PS you go to?? What is there background for injecting botox?

Hi, the person i go to is an ex general practitioner now cosmetic md, she assures me it will return to normal where as neurologist says any resolution is seen in first 6 months and as none in my case except brow lowering even further he feels there is unlikely to be any. Feel as if i'm living in a nightmare which I can't wake up from. Nowhere had I ever read of such possible devastating results!

Hmm. I have used Botox and now Myobloc for ten years or so now and have never heard of a case like yours. After repeated use in a particular patient, Botox/Myobloc usually wears off too quickly not too slowly. It is conceivable that your problems are related to muscular atrophy from repeated use, but this is not common.

I wish you the best in achieving correction,

Hi, well my consultant says it will wear off in 8-12 months, many articles I have read claim treatments can last longer each time but the neurologist says the muscles above the brow are thinned. Do you think this could be why the nerves won't reattach?. I thought in cases of injury even, that muscles regain their strength if left alone, do you think this can be true in a case of botox weakened muscle? The neurologist said even six injections in your life were enough to waste the muscles and given his view on this I was most surprised to note that they preform botox two corridors down from where he addressed my consultation. I wonder if you know whether it is possible to have a brow lift with the underlying muscle problem if indeed his prognosis is correct. Many thanks for your time.

Hi,
I am working on a story for People magazine about the problems some people are having with Restylane and other facial injectables and am wondering if you (or anyone reading this message) are willing to be interviewed and photographed for this story. We hope to show how these types of procedures are becoming a very popular alternative to plastic surgery and also tell readers that, as in your case, they are not always fool-proof, and to alert them to be aware that complications can arise. I hope you and others will share your story. Please contact me ASAP, but no later than Dec. 13th, at hshenfeld(at)comcast(dot)net. Please include your name, city, daytime phone number and a bit about your problem. Many thanks.

Hi, sorry no i just don't feel up to it at the moment. Maybe when I have more conclusive evidence of what will ultimately happen. Appreciate people should know of risks but am very ill and down at mo, sorry.

Last time I went in for Botox, I noticed the PS nurse looking at the map of my face and injecting the botox in different areas than the time before, so she did not want to repeat in the same area. I only have botox twice a year at most and had never noticed her doing this. I wonder if there have been problems with repeated injections in the same areas.

Yes this is apparently the problem, on the first droop I visited a different establishment as I wasn't upto travelling the distance to my usual one. He put 10units above each eye and I had right sided ptosis for 5 months before it went completely back to normal. As the same ares have always been used I think the muscle apathy is obviously a problem I just think it may take over 12 months to wear off. I can't see why they would say permanent damage when people who have injury or strokes develop muscle apathy from the none use of muscles but in time heal. I though the nerves and muscles over time naturally healed themselves. Lets hope so.
