Product Description & Benefits: The all-natural, FDA-approved, professional-grade Avogel Scar Reduction Hydrogel Sheeting is the leading water-based gel sheet (hydrogel) for reducing the scar size, thickness, firmness, height, and color of all types of scars, including new and old scars, post-surgery scars, keloids, hypertrophic scars, and other scar types caused by injury, trauma, and burns. Avogel helps flatten, smooth, soften, and fade the color of the scar. Composed of 60-70% water and containing no silicone, Avogel can help reduce tenderness, pain and itching (pruritus) associated with scarring, and lessen redness surrounding the scar (erythema).
Noticeable scar fading is usually seen in 2-4 weeks. For best results, patients should continue to use Avogel for four weeks after the scar fades.
Avogel is made of a soft, comfortable, and highly flexible polymer material that can be easily cut to fit any scar size and can be used on almost any anatomical location of the body. Avogel sheets may be used to help in the prevention of hypertrophic and keloid scarring when used on closed scars following surgery, trauma, or burns.
Avogel's scar reduction benefits can be explained by the hydrogel's capacity to ensure that the covered skin maintains a continuous elevation of skin temperature, which is an essential element in scar reduction. The water bound in the hydrogel creates a supersaturated environment for the covered skin and ensures that the skin is optimally hydrated for scar healing. This increased healing and scar remodeling activity allows the hydrogel to obtain optimal scar healing in 12-18 hours per day, whereas conventional silicone sheeting requires a longer daily treatment time.
Avogel's scar reduction benefits are backed by clinical studies which demonstrate that 80% of scars became softer, less elevated, and returned toward normal skin color. Additionally, 100% of patients experienced improvement in symptoms of pruritus (itching), pain, and tenderness.
How Does Avogel Hydrogel Compare to Silicone Sheeting? Avogel's hydrogel sheeting has recently been approved by the FDA and is considered equivalent to silicone sheeting in controlling scar formation and reducing scars. In addition to providing comparable scar reduction results, Avogel offers the added advantage of promoting hydration of the scar, which is known to be an essential element in scar reduction therapy. Avogel hydrogel holds more moisture than conventional silicone products. Several reports have also shown that hydrogel sheeting also has fewer side effects than silicone. The optimal period of use of hydrogel sheets for a scar reduction treatment is 12-18 hours per day, whereas conventional silicone sheeting requires a longer daily treatment time. Additionally, Avogel is all natural and can be safely used on patients who have allergic reactions to silicone.
The main benefit of hydrogel sheeting compared to scar healing gels and ointments is that hydrogel sheets increase the temperature of the scar, which is beneficial for minimizing scar appearance. A scar ointment or gel does not have this benefit. In contrast to scar gels, scar sheets are easier and more convenient to apply and use day to day because they are not greasy, do not stain, and do not stick to clothes. Many patients use both scar gels and scar sheets on their scars to maximize the effectiveness of scar reduction products.
Why Is This Hydrogel Sheet Better Than Over-The-Counter Products Found In Stores? Over-the-counter scar sheets are made with less silicone or hydrogel, are of lower quality, and are not as thick, which prevents them from maintaining a consistently raised skin temperature. Additionally, Avogel can be cut to fit the size and shape of the scar, while over-the-counter products typically come in one size.
Instructions for Use:
Preparation: First, wash and completely dry hands before use. Gently cleanse the scar and surrounding skin with mild soap before application. Dry skin. Remove Avogel from the foil pouch. Unfold the white protective sheet and let it serve as your work area.
Sizing: With scissors, trim the Avogel to the size of the scar, allowing at least 1 inch of the Avogel to extend beyond the scar border. The sheet should fully cover the scar and extend 1 beyond the scar, on all sides. Peel the plastic backing off the Avogel. Save the plastic backing for storing the Avogel after use.
Application: Gently press the adhesive side of the Avogel over the scar so it fits firmly over the contours of the scar. Make sure the edges of the Avogel extend one inch beyond the scar border. Netting, gauze, cloth bandages, stretch or pressure garments may be worn over the Avogel to keep it in place. Return the unused portion of the Avogel back into the foil pouch and store it in the re-sealable bag provided. Store the Avogel at room temperature.
Treatment: Wear the Avogel continuously for a minimum of 12 hours each day, with at least a two to four hour break for adequate air-drying. Do not exceed a treatment time of 18 hours per day.
Precautions: Do not use on open wounds. Avogel must not be used when the scar is draining, infected, or damaged. Avogel is not intended to be placed in direct contact with bodily fluids. Do not use Avogel while swimming or bathing. Do not wear the Avogel for more than 18 hours to avoid skin maceration. Discontinue use of the hydrogel when it becomes dry and inflexible. Discontinue use in the event of itching, rash, redness, pain, swelling, or other signs of discomfort. Contact your physician if signs of infection occur (increased pain, swelling, redness, or drainage), if a rash or odor develops, or if any other unexpected symptoms occur.
Scar Sheet Care: After treatment, wash the Avogel with warm water and a mild soap. Do not use harsh cleaning agents such as dish detergents. Dry the Avogel with a clean cloth. Replace the plastic backing on the adhesive side of the Avogel. Place the Avogel in the re-sealable bag provided and store at room temperature. Discard Avogel sheeting after 4-5 uses.
