Madonna’s Black Eyes: Plastic Surgery?

Posted on December 12th, 2007 in Celebrity Plastic Surgery by Jet H. Ross

Madonna has been an enigma to fans ever since she stopped aging a decade ago. With rumors of plastic surgery being repeatedly denied by Madonna, people have been left to wonder if the star’s macrobiotic diet and intense workouts are the real reason for Madonna’s remarkable youthful look. All doubts may now be cast aside, as seeing Madonna with two black eyes hidden under a pair of sunglasses leaving a medical building in New York on Monday have renewed rumors that 49-year old Queen of Pop has undergone a mini face lift, or blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), or some other facial plastic surgery.

Madonna, Facelift, Face Lift

Being that Madonna is happily married to Guy Ritchie and domestic violence is not the likely cause of the bruises, plastic surgery is a very strong possibility. Such a bruising pattern is a typical tell-tale sign of cosmetic surgery. Such bruising can occur following a mid face lift or cheek lift whose purpose is to enhance the appearance of droopy cheeks and result in a more proportionate, youthful face. Being that the bruising was not considerable, it is possible that Madonna has already been recuperating for a good few days and the bruising was less pronounced.  Alternatively, a blepharoplasty to remove sagging skin, tighten droopy eyelids, and take out under eye bags can lead to this type of bruising. Further, dermal injections such as Restylane in the lower eyelid can also result in bruising of this type.

Madonna, Face Lift, Facelift

The case for Madonna having plastic surgery is quite convincing, as earlier this year Madonna shocked audiences with her unbelievably refreshed look at the 2007 Oscars, which led Make Me Heal and other insiders to believe that she treated herself to some minimally invasive facial cosmetic procedures such as Thermage, dermal fillers like Botox, and possibly even a mini facelift. With the under-eye bruises in toe, the case for a mid-facelift becomes plausible. Looking at pictures of Madonna, one cannot help but notice the sudden disappearance of her former crows feet around her eyes, the absence of her once prominent naso-labial folds (that emanate from the corner of her nose), the lack of wrinkles on her forehead, the sudden tighter jaw line, and the lack of loose skin on her clean and taut neck line. Only a few years ago, Madonna started having some serious naso-labial lines and her jaw has become slacker with looser skin. With this aging pattern, one would expect Madonna to have some jowls, forehead lines, and sagging skin on her neck. The lack of these normal age-related facial changes signals a potential small mini facelift. A mini facelift involves tightening some muscles and removing excess skins. Of course, it is possible that Madonna has dabbled in non-invasive treatments such as thermage or chemical peels. The lack of wrinkles around her forehead suggest botox injections and the lack of crow’s feet around her eyes indicate that she got dermal fillers in that zone. For these reasons, it appears that Madonna has been having small cosmetic procedures all along her career to keep her look eternally refreshed. The potential procedure that led to Madonna’s bruised eyes may simply be one of many procedures she has to keep herself in her prime shape.

After looking at the photos, plastic surgeon John Di Saia told Make Me Heal that a few different types of plastic surgeries could be at hand for Madonna.

“Lower eyelid bruising could indicate lower blepharoplasty and/or rhinoplasty. Some docs also inject soft tissue fillers such as Restylane TM in the lower eyelid “trough” and this can result in a bruise as well,” says Di Saia.

London-based plastic surgery consultant Adrian Richards remarked on Madonna’s age defying look, saying that on a woman of her age “you would expect to see jowls, lines across the forehead, and eyebrows which are beginning to droop”. As Madonna’s pictures show, this is hardly the case for this age-defying beauty.

Richards goes on to say that the aging process should actually have accelerated in light of Madonna’s active lifestyle and hard-core workouts. “That’s especially the case for someone who has done a lot of running, which loosens skin and muscle due to all the pounding, and general exercise, which increases the body’s production of free radicals, the atoms which can damage cells and speed up the ageing process,” adds Richards.

Along with the mini-lift or other facial cosmetic procedures is talk of a breast augmentation that Madonna is rumored to have had this past summer (read the full article about Madonna’s breast augmentation). The rumors were sparked after Madonna had seemingly grown by a cup size earlier this summer, when compared to her smaller chest in early 2006. Then, Madonna is also rumored to have some nose slimming back in the 1990’s.

Madonna, Breast Implants, Augmentation

Madonna has previously gone on the record about plastic surgery, saying “I am not going to have a press conference if I have plastic surgery”. And rightfully so, why should she? While she may have gotten cosmetic surgery, Madonna’s look is not attributed solely to the knife. Credit is to be given to Madonna who has gone to far measures to keep herself in great shape with her strict diet, skincare regimen, exercise, and healthy lifestyle achieved by a balance of physical exercise and spiritual endeavors such as her Kabbalah practice.

Scarlett Johansson’s Nose Job Rumor: True or False?

Posted on December 5th, 2007 in Celebrity Plastic Surgery by Lisa Stern

With Scarlett Johansson planning to sue US Weekly for its just-released story speculating that she had a nose job, Make Me Heal thought it noteworthy to revisit its analysis of Scarlett’s nose that it published in a article on October 19 of this year on the Makemeheal.com website (read the full article on Scarlett Johansson’s Nose Job Rumor). The determination made by Make Me Heal has always been that Johansson’s nose is completely natural and plastic surgery-free.

Scarlett Johansson, Nose Job, Rhinoplasty

Looking at photos of Scarlett from her teenage years to present, one commonality is a rather wide bridge complete with a bulbous tip. In her teen years, Scarlett’s nose seemed to overpower her face and appear wide in proportion to her face. As Scarlett grew older, her nose appeared to become more refined, the bridge slimmer, and the tip less bulbous. In her recent appearances, Scarlett’s nose has appeared narrower than before and the bridge more refined. This is the basis for the rumor supporting Johansson having gotten a nose job to refine and slim down the bridge.

But the photos are misleading, as a closer look at them shows that Scarlett’s nostrils remained the same and that her bulbous tip is still present, although it is well disguised by artful use of makeup. In some photos, the bridge is slim and in others the bridge is just as wide as before. The optical illusion at hand is both the result of Scarlett simply growing into her new nose as the shape of her face changes, with her nose seeming big when she is a teen and then appearing smaller as an adult. Additionally, Scarlett’s makeup artists have simply concealed some of the “bulbousity” of her tip and the wideness of the bridge, making her nose appear surgically enhanced.

For the above reasons, Scarlett Johansson’s nose is completely natural and she does not appear to have undergone any rhinoplasty procedure.

Dr. Paul S. Nassif, a Facial Plastic and Reconstrucive Surgeon of Beverly Hills, California spoke with Make Me Heal and also dismissed the nose job rumor, concluding that her nose is natural.

“From what I can tell from looking at photos of Ms. Johansson, it doesn’t look as if she has had a rhinoplasty,” says Nassif.

“Overall, her nose looks the same. Make-up applied specifically to certain places on the nose may make it look smaller. Her bridge appears mildly wide, her tip has a “cute” bulbousity to it, and her nostrils flare slightly appear to be the same as per when she was younger (minimal make up on photo) to now. Overall, her nose looks “cute” on her face.”

Scarlett Johansson, US Weekly CoverScarlett Johansson is justifiably angry about the wrong allegations about her natural beak and plans to sue US Weekly.

“I have always been straightforward with the press regarding my body image and I am very concerned that my fans (and perhaps even my employers) will feel misled. Thus, I feel compelled to take immediate legal action against US Weekly,” says Johansson.

Johansson’s representative discredited the sources and photos used by US Weekly, claiming the photos were taken years apart in different lighting and makeup, which led to the false impression of a nose job.

In a statement made to OK! Magazine, the rep says “US Weekly’s cover story regarding Scarlett Johansson and its clear implication that she has had plastic or cosmetic surgery on her nose is an outrageous and defamatory fabrication lacking any conceivable basis or proof, despite vehement denials by Ms. Johansson prior to publication.”

“Not surprisingly, US magazine cannot provide the dates when she supposedly had this surgery, who performed the surgery, or what was supposedly done — all because there simply is no truth to the story. The publication made a pathetic attempt to validate its story by using two cover photos of Scarlett that were taken years apart with obviously different make-up and lighting, and then relying on an “expert’s opinion” (based solely on looking at the two photos) on what “might” have been done. It wasn’t,” reads the statement.

Interestingly, Johansson is a supporter of plastic surgery and has gone on record before to say that she would have plastic surgery when the aging process kicks in.

“Oh I definitely believe in plastic surgery. I don’t want to be an old hag, there’s no fun in that,” says Johansson.

Ashley Tisdale: I Got A Nose Job For Medical Reasons

Posted on December 4th, 2007 in Celebrity Plastic Surgery by Jet H. Ross

There is a growing Hollywood trend of getting a rhinoplasty (nose job) and then trying to pass it off as a medical treatment to alleviate breathing problems. Ashley Tisdale of “High School Musical” may just be another star jumping on this bandwagon, joining the likes of Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Aniston who have also insisted they had nose jobs only for the sake of repairing deviated septums. The only problem is that these celebrity noses appear to be improved cosmetically and that their procedures are not technically only medical – they are outright plastic surgery.

Ashley Tisdale, Nose Job, Rhinoplasty

The 22-year old Tisdale had a five-hour surgery on Friday in Los Angeles to repair a nose septum that was 80% percent deviated and to correct two small nose fractures. Tisdale claims that prior to the surgery her breathing problems worsened to the point that she could no longer breathe from her right nostril.

“Growing up I always knew I had a deviated septum on the right side of my nose, which caused trouble breathing,” Tisdale told People on Monday from her Los Angeles home.

“The older I got, the worse it got. I went to get it checked out, and the doctor told me the septum was 80 percent deviated and that I had two small fractures on my nose.”

Tisdale vehemently denies having gotten the surgery for cosmetic reasons and says that she is not a supporter of plastic surgery.

“I didn’t do this because I believe in plastic surgery. I did this to help my health. I literally almost could not breathe out of the right side of my nose,” said Tisdale.

“I want my fans to know the truth. I’m not someone who is going to act like I had nothing done. I just want to be honest because my fans are everything to me.”

It is quite commendable that Tisdale was so open about her surgery, as she probably knows that rumors would soon abound about her surgery if she kept mum about it. Only time will tell if the nose job that Tisdale got was done for medical reasons, or if it imparted a few cosmetic benefits. Looking at Tisdale’s old nose it seems that her bridge twists to the right slightly at the top, but is otherwise quite a nice nose that does not require cosmetic enhancement. While Tisdale’s case may indeed prove to be a medical necessity, it is likely that her corrective surgery will have some cosmetic benefits and that the star had taken the opportunity to also improve upon her nose while repairing her deviated septum.

In other cases, Cameron Diaz is a fine example of a star who claims to have gotten a septoplasty only for medical reasons. While Cameron Diaz had a nose job for medical reasons, the surgery definitively improved the look of her nose, as the new nose has a narrower tip and straighter bridge compared to the old crooked nose which had a slight twist to the right of the top area of her bridge and a wider tip (see a full article on Cameron Diaz’s nose job).

Speaking about Diaz with Make Me Heal, Dr. Paul Nassif, a plastic surgeon based in Beverly Hills, said:

“Cameron had a definite rhinoplasty. In her before photo, her nose looked bulbous and wide especially her nostrils area (ala), the after photo reveals a softer, narrower tip, ala (nostrils) and nasal dorsum. Cameron’s nose now looks pretty natural.”
