The procedure involves the excision of surplus bone or cartilage which are the cause of deviation. An incision is made in the lining of the septum to reach the cartilage targeted for removal. The entire procedure is performed through the nostrils. Once the excess bone and cartilage have been removed, the septum is stabalized with splints until it heals. In this case, most of the cartilage removed during the septoplasty is then carved a reused inside the nose to create a more appealing appearance. This is especially true in revision rhinoplasty.
Following a septoplasty procedure bruising and swelling can be expected. The nasal cavities will have splints sutured in place and gauze is taped underneath the nose to absorb any discharge.. Frequent changing of this gauze is required for 1 to 2 days. This is when an discharge will have stopped. Following removal of the gauze, saline irrigations of the nasal cavities are nessasary. Now it is also OK to blow the nose, but gently. A patient will be able to blow their nose in a normal fashion 1-2 weeks following the surgery.
