Post inflammatory hyper pigmentation is not uncommon in aggressive laser treatments. Anyone with a genetic background that predisposes them to hyper pigmentation should have preparatory pigmentation suppression treatment - usually this includes a topical lotion or solution with hydroquinone (HQ) - or other melanin suppressors if the patient is sensitive to HQ.

Most often we will also treat after laser treatments to to prevent hyper pigmentation and brown spots. any patient who has South American, Asian or Middle Eastern background - even many generations back - should be ask about how potential laser treatments could affect the coloring of their skin.

It is crucial that you protect your skin from the sun. Once the pigment cells are "excited" they only up the activity with sun or heat exposure.

There are a couple of viable options. There is actually a new laser (also by Fraxel) that is specific for helping to lessen pigmentation that is superficial. This is called the Thulium laser and is quite helpful and quick.

Another option may be to use a product system such as Cosmelan or customized hydroquinone topical you can apply with pads.

No matter what you choose, sun avoidance and consistent every day sun protection with quality multi-ingredient sunscreen are a must. (less)
